Ryan Fitzpatrick shared a hilarious story about a text he sent to Alex Smith that aged poorly.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has decided to continue his long and fascinating NFL career with the Washington Football Team in 2021. He joins the organization just when Alex Smith decided to call it quits and retire after a heroic comeback performance in 2020.

Smith, of course, had a miracle year in 2020 after returning from one of the more catastrophic injuries in NFL history. He nearly had his leg amputated and ended up having 17 surgeries to repair his leg. Walking was a tough enough task. Playing in the NFL again was almost unreal.

Fitzpatrick was a guest on the Green Light Podcast, featuring Chris Long. He ended up sharing a hilarious story about how he sent a text to Smith following the initial injury in 2018. Fitzpatrick, who also dealt with a bad leg injury in his career, tried to tell Smith everything would be just fine.

Ryan Fitzpatrick still regrets his one text to Alex Smith

The funniest part is how Smith was ready with a polite response. Fitzpatrick was just trying to be nice and he now hilariously calls it the worst text he ever sent. Smith’s situation was indeed far more complicated than Fitzpatrick’s tibia injury that was brutal in itself.

Smith’s injury is hopefully something that will never be seen in the NFL again. It was so bad that the moment he took a single snap in 2020 he became the only choice for Comeback Player of the Year.

Fitzpatrick is now in Washington for what remains an interesting quarterback situation. Smith and Dwayne Haskins are both gone, leaving Fitzpatrick to compete with Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen for the starting job. Or the team could draft a top quarterback and get the reset they wanted when they drafted Haskins back in 2019.

Having Fitzpatrick around provides stability and it is funny he is still worried about a single text he sent a few years back. He is likely not the only one who originally tried to make Smith feel better by saying everything would be fine.
