The Chicago Bears hit it out of the park when they drafted Justin Fields, but not all of their moves were the right ones in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Few teams had a better 2021 NFL Draft than the Bears. They got their quarterback and addressed a bunch of needs in later rounds.

Even so, no draft is perfect. There are always things a team could have done differently or better.

For Chicago, it’s all about the price they paid for the moves they made and what they chose to focus on when.

Here are three mistakes the Bears made in the 2021 NFL Draft

3. Drafting a running back

The Bears used a sixth-round pick to grab Khalil Herbert out of Virginia Tech.

After four ho-hum years at Kansas, he transferred to Virginia Tech and had a breakout season with 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns.

The thing is selections that late on Day 3 are all flips of a coin. Each team is just crossing their fingers and hoping the guy they got is the one who will surprise people when all is said and done. It’s like betting on a longshot racehorse. You’re making a calculated risk, but there’s a reason they’re not the favorite.

Herbert could turn out to be worthy of that pick, but Chicago wasn’t really in need of a gamble on a running back. When they picked Herbert, they still hadn’t selected a cornerback or wide receiver, two positions of significantly greater need.
