College Football Playoff National Championship odds: Georgia could be out if no expansion
By John Buhler
Georgia football fans should want the College Football Playoff field to expand yesterday.
The Georgia football program would benefit the most from College Football Playoff expansion.
Georgia is a top-five program in the country. The Dawgs recruit at a top-five level annually and have played in a New Year’s Six bowl each of the last four seasons. However, they have only made the College Football Playoff once in the CFP era. The big issue for Kirby Smart’s team is that Georgia plays in the same SEC that prominently features the dynastic Alabama Crimson Tide.
Here are the latest College Football Playoff National Championship odds. Odds are from WynnBet.
Latest College Football Playoff National Championship odds
- Alabama Crimson Tide: +350
- Clemson Tigers: +450
- Ohio State Buckeyes: +600
- Georgia Bulldogs: +900
- Oklahoma Sooners: +900
What these national title odds indicate is this. Georgia is about as talented as Oklahoma, according to the bookmakers. However, Georgia is not the favorite to win the SEC this season, as the Dawgs are expected to fall to Alabama in Atlanta. With that loss, that would mean presumptive Big 12 champion Oklahoma would get in as the No. 4 seed over an at-large Georgia team yet again.
While expanding the playoff field from four to six, eight, 12 or even 16 teams would absolutely dilute the meaningful college football regular season, we keep getting the same four teams into the playoff just about every year. How many more times do we need to see Oklahoma lose a national semifinal game knowing darn well a battle-tested team like Georgia would do better?
If these odds do pan out, then we need to seriously consider playoff expansion down the line.
