Francis Ngannou reacts just the way we expected to laughable interim title

Francis Ngannou is no different than the rest of the MMA community in his reaction to the UFC booking a Derrick Lewis vs. Ciryl Gane interim title fight at UFC 265

In a move that has the MMA world baffled, the UFC is reportedly going to have Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane clash in an interim heavyweight championship fight to headline UFC 265 on Aug. 7.

This decision comes after various reports and rumors that Lewis was going to challenge current UFC heavyweight champ Francis Ngannou. Negotiations reportedly stalled due to Ngannou needing a bit more time, but it had very recently seemed likely that Ngannou and Lewis could have met in September.

Ngannou did not shy away from hiding his displeasure with the UFC’s decision on social media.

Ngannou was directly referencing his UFC 249 clash with Jairzinho Rozenstruik, which Ngannou won in just 20 seconds via knockout.

At the time, negotiations were ongoing for the Stipe Miocic-Daniel Cormier trilogy. Due to the uncertainty of the fight and Miocic’s then-immediate fighting future, combined with the COVID pandemic, there was a push to make Ngannou vs. Rozenstruik an interim title fight — which the UFC apparently rejected.

The 20-second finish in May 2020 was Ngannou’s first fight since knocking off Junior dos Santos 11 months prior, and Ngannou wouldn’t fight again until UFC 260 in March, where he knocked out Miocic in two rounds to finally become heavyweight champion.

Lewis scored an upset KO of Curtis Blaydes earlier this year, while Gane just defeated Alexander Volkov by decision in the main event of UFC Vegas 30 on June 26.

UFC 265 is planned to take place in Houston, TX, the hometown of Lewis.
