Kofi Cockburn has 3 finalists ahead of transfer decision and Kentucky is 1 of them
Kofi Cockburn has trimmed his list down to three prospects: Illinois, Florida State, and Kentucky.
Illinois basketball All-American Kofi Cockburn has a pretty big decision to make within the next few days.
The star center has trimmed his list of future destinations down to three schools to choose from in the transfer portal: Illinois, Florida State and Kentucky.
While the future is unclear, each fit has its own benefits in the long run.
It’s not 100 percent guaranteed he’ll return to Illinois. In fact, the other options are so intriguing that it would almost be a surprise to see him return in Orange and Blue in 2021-22.
Where will Kofi Cockburn transfer?
One saving grace for Illinois fans is the fact that Cockburn’s other options are quickly looking less and less appealing and likely.
Waiting for him at Flordia State would be a handful of new faces like Matt Cleveland and Jalen Warley. MJ Walker and Scottie Barnes are taking their chances in the NBA Draft, which means Cockburn would slide into a starring role for the Noles as they attempt to best their 18-7 record last season. It’s a tall task to stand out in the always competitive ACC, and the Noles don’t have the type of storied success other schools in the conference have as far as consistency in making the tournament.
Then there are reports from Kentucky Sports Radio and SB Nation are saying that Cockburn may not be a fit for Kentucky this season. Good news for Illini fans hoping Cockburn returns, but bad news for him if his goal is to find a better landing spot than Illinois.
Keith Farmer even weighed in to try and figure out how the Cockburn to Kentucky rumors got this out of control.
Cockburn announced on Twitter his final decision is to be made on Friday, July 16.
If the 11th-hour chaos of his transfer portal destinations is any indication, whatever he decides is surely going to make this upcoming season very interesting.
