Bears: 3 replacements for Allen Robinson if he leaves next offseason
By Mark Powell
Bears trade for a true superstar in OBJ
This one feels the most unlikely. The Bears would be moving on from a player of Robinson’s caliber because of financial stress. Trading for Beckham would put them right back where they started.
However, OBJ at his best has the potential to pair well with an emerging star like Fields. He provides instant star power to a Chicago receiver core that would be lacking minus Robinson. If Pace survives this coming season, the heat will still be on to improve year-in and year-out. Standing pat while losing a player like Robinson isn’t necessarily an option. Pickens and JuJu are decent replacements, but do they really give Fields the top target he deserves? What’s the point of having a quarterback on a rookie deal if you aren’t going all-in to win now?
Beckham would be costly if he has a good year, but he hasn’t been at full strength at quite some time. If he falls flat again in 2021, he’s worth taking a shot on. Per Over the Cap, Beckham is due $0 in guaranteed money in both 2022 and 2023 if he’s designated a pre-June 1 cut. So, if it doesn’t work out, the Bears aren’t completely crewed over financially.
