Chelsea are obsessed with the idea of signing Erling Haaland this summer. That obsession has the future of Callum Hudson-Odoi in serious doubt.

Prying Erling Haaland away from Borussia Dortmund is Chelsea’s top transfer priority at the moment. Unfortunately for the Blues, the Bundesliga club continue to knock back the club’s advances for the prolific striker.

Chelsea attempted to get creative with their latest offer by including both striker Tammy Abraham and attacker Callum Hudson-Odoi as a part of the deal. The inclusion of Abraham is no surprise. Haaland’s arrival at Stamford Bridge would make the young Englishman surplus to requirements at the striker position.

The potential inclusion of Hudson-Odoi is an entirely different matter. He is a young player that seemed to be gaining momentum under Thomas Tuchel last season. Sending him to Dortmund would be a major risk for a Chelsea side that needs to continue to bring through young, English talent to the first team.

Giving up on Hudson-Odoi would be a massive gamble

The temptation of adding Haaland to the starting XI is clearly having a powerful effect on Chelsea decision-makers. They’ve previously been highly protective of Hudson-Odoi whenever another club made enquiries about the talented youngster.

The Blues have correctly identified him as a player that could put a dent in Dortmund’s resolve to hang on to Haaland at all costs. It’s easy to envision a scenario where officials at the German club believe he can follow in the footsteps of young English players like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham to become superstars at Signal Iduna Park.

That doesn’t mean parting with Hudson-Odoi is work the risk for Chelsea. Dortmund are still going to require the Blues to pay in excess of £100 million no matter what players are included in the deal. Given that premium, Chelsea should draw the line short of including Hudson-Odoi.

Instead, the Blues should power on with an offer of Abraham and all the cash required to make Dortmund flinch. Unless Hudson-Odoi is valued in excess of £50 million he shouldn’t be on the table in these talks.
