A press release from PBC and Top Rank officially announced the postponement of Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder 3. The new date is Saturday, Oct. 9.

After more than a week of reports from boxing writers and unnamed ”sources,” it’s finally official. Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder 3 has been postponed until Saturday, Oct. 9, due to a positive COVID-19 test from Fury and an outbreak among his team.

PBC and Top Rank put out a press release in the late morning on Thursday, July 15, formally announcing the postponement.

“The heavyweight trilogy showdown between WBC and lineal world champion Tyson ‘The Gypsy King’ Fury and former world champion Deontay ‘The Bronze Bomber’ Wilder — scheduled for Saturday, July 24 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas – has been postponed due to Fury’s positive COVID-19 diagnosis,” read the press release.

The fight will go down at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on the new date.

Also included in the press release were comments from Fury and Wilder’s co-manager Shelly Finkel.

Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder 3 will now take place on Saturday, Oct. 9, from T-Mobile Arena

“I wanted nothing more than to smash the ‘Big Dosser’ on July 24, but I guess the beating will have to wait,” read Fury’s statement. “Make no mistake, I will be back and better than ever. We will fight Oct. 9, and I will knock him spark out!”

“This is what we went to arbitration for,” stated Finkel in the press release. “He [Wilder] just wanted what was owed to him. He remains ready to reclaim his world title on Oct. 9.”

This news was expected but took longer than usual to announce formally. Boxingscene.com’s Jake Donovan stated via Twitter that the delay was due to “lingering minor details.”

An announcement needed to come out after the social media firestorm regarding Fury’s apparent travels around Las Vegas on July 14 despite news of his covid diagnosis.

ESPN’s Mike Coppinger tweeted that “sources” revealed that Fury’s positive test came on July 5 and that a doctor cleared him for travel on July 13.

All of this was handled poorly and will result in doubtful speculation regarding the reason for the fight’s postponement and Fury’s health. The details of Fury’s health coming from “sources” rather than Top Rank or Fury himself is a bad look that’s likely to hurt him in the court of public opinion.
