The Chicago Cubs appear likely to trade Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo and the only question fans have is “Why would they do such a thing?”

Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo are out of the Cubs lineup on Thursday as a trade may appear imminent for two of the cornerstones of the 2016 World Series champions.

Bryant is the type of player that does everything well. He plays literally all over the diamond, playing everywhere but catcher this year. He runs well, hits for power, is great in the locker room and in the community.

Rizzo is the captain of the Cubs and was the first big piece brought to the organization when Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer built a roster that won the 2016 World Series.

Why are the Cubs exploring trades for Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo?

Cubs owner Tom Ricketts is cheap.

He’s why the Cubs are shopping Bryant and Rizzo and breaking up Bryzzo and breaking the hearts of Cubs fans around the globe. It’s why he traded Yu Darvish in the offseason for a handful of lottery tickets in the form of low-level teenage prospects.

If Ricketts wasn’t crying poor over “biblical losses” he’d have no problem opening up the purse strings and giving Bryant and Rizzo the fair market value contracts they’ve earned and are deserving.

Instead, Ricketts will try to tell Cubs fans that they aren’t rebuilding and hope to contend in 2022 with David Bote, Jason Heyward and Patrick Wisdom in the lineup and a one-man rotation of Kyle Hendricks.

Cubs fans thought it was bad when the Tribune owned the team, and it was bad, but Ricketts is just another billionaire owner with no baseball acumen. For a person who calls himself a Cubs fan, Ricketts sure isn’t operating his business like one.

This is a shame.
