After seemingly missing on Max Scherzer, the Dodgers depth chart is close to not only adding the ace but his teammate Trea Turner.

On Thursday afternoon, it appeared as though the San Diego Padres were on the verge of landing Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer to help add to their super rotation. Yet, the Los Angeles Dodgers have officially cut the line to make a run at Scherzer and another star of the Nationals.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Dodgers are “making significant progress” on a trade that would land them Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner from the Nationals in exchange for a “prospect-laden return.”

Dodgers depth chart is about to be loaded with even more talent

As for what the Nationals would be getting in return for Scherzer and Turner, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers would likely be sending their No. 1 prospect (16th-overall in league) in catcher Keibert Ruiz.

The Dodgers were not going to stand by to see a rival like the Padres land Scherzer to add to their rotation of Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Blake Snell and Chris Paddack. It just so happens that the Dodgers are in need of rotation help. Trevor Bauer is out indefinitely while he is under investigation for sexual assault, Clayton Kershaw is on the 10-day injured list and Dustin May is out for the season.

While the Dodgers are set to have shortstop Corey Seager returning from a fractured hand in the near future, he will become an unrestricted free agent this winter. Not only that, but Turner has one more year of arbitration remaining until he is set to hit the open market at the end of the 2022 season. Never a bad thing to have some insurance, especially if Seager is to sign elsewhere in the majors.

Scherzer has recorded a 2.76 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 147 strikeouts over 111.0 innings of work (19 starts). As for Turner, he is slashing .322/.369/.521 while recording 18 home runs, 49 RBI, 66 runs scored and 125 hits through 96 games.

As is always the case at the MLB trade deadline, you can never count out the Dodgers in any sweepstakes for a difference-making superstar. In this case, the Dodgers decided to get two of them.
