The USWNT pulled out a thrilling quarterfinals victory over The Netherlands, jolting every American awake on a Friday morning.

Who needs coffee in the morning when you have an Olympics soccer quarterfinal match that comes down to penalty kicks?

The USWNT played its quarterfinal match against a ferociously talented Dutch team, and it’s no surprise that things came right down to the wire. Megan Rapinoe very surprisingly came through in the clutch to help the United State advance on penalty kicks, but the entire match was a white-knuckled ride.

When it was over, fans absolutely lost their minds when the USWNT was able to bounce back against The Netherlands and advance on penalty kicks.

USA vs Netherlands: USWNT Goalie Alyssa Naeher stole the show

The main takeaway, obviously, was a collective sense of pride and rejoicing that the USWNT was able to fight back and advance to the semifinals. Within that joy, however, was a very specific love for USWNT goalie Alyssa Naeher, who is a hero after her performance throughout the entire match.

Without Naeher, the USWNT arguably does not advance.

2021 Olympics Soccer Bracket

The Women’s bracket is down to the final four nations standing. The USWNT will meet Canada on Monday in the semifinals, while Australia and Sweden will square off in the later match.

Sweden pummeled the United States in the opening match of the Olympics group play, which is sure to be a narrative that gets dusted off more than a few times as the semifinals approach and even more so if the two teams rematch in the Gold Medal match.
