Packers: Brian Gutekunst comes down hard on Devin Funchess for racist comments
Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst was not pleased at all with Devin Funchess for his racist comment over the weekend.
Wide receiver Devin Funchess made countless headlines over the weekend, but not in a way the Green Bay Packers were hoping for. During a press conference, Funchess dropped a racist comment when speaking with reporters.
Funchess wasted no time in delivering an apology, saying he didn’t mean any ill will with his comments. General manager Brian Gutekunst let it be known he’s incredibly disappointed with his receiver’s behavior.
Brian Gutekunst was not happy whatsoever with Devin Funchess making a racist comment
“Unfortunately there was a comment made by Devin Funchess Saturday night that was very unacceptable and certainly doesn’t live up to the standards and values of the Green Bay Packers,” Gutekunst said via packersnews.com. “We’ve addressed it with Devin. He knows it’s unacceptable. I do think he’s sincerely remorseful and will hopefully learn from this.
“Hopefully our team can learn from this, and we’ll move forward. I do want to say that’s something that is not condoned, and it certainly doesn’t live up to what we believe.”
When Gutekunst was asked if he considered releasing Funchess for making the comment, he said that won’t be happening at this moment and that he believes his apology was sincere. At the same time, Gutekunst also made it more than clear that Funchess can’t have something like this happen again.
If he does have another incident go down where he uses racist language, then he very well could no longer have a spot on the team with the Packers. Moving forward, the veteran wideout will need to be more careful with what he says.
