Blue Jays: 3 ways Robbie Ray made history on Monday night

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Robbie Ray put his name in the record books with another outstanding outing on the mound against the Orioles.

Robbie Ray’s candidacy for the AL Cy Young improved on Monday night with a record-setting performance in Toronto.

The Blue Jays ace won his 10th game of the season with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of action. He gave up two earned runs but his offense came through in a 7-3 victory.

The W wasn’t the only thing Ray won on the night.

Robbie Ray is now in the Blue Jays record books

The performance put Ray in some rare company. He is now one of just two players in Blue Jays history to log 10 strikeouts in three consecutive starts. The other one? None other than Roger Clemens.

That’s not the only mark he shares with Clemens. His 202 strikeouts are the most by a Blue Jays pitcher in just 26 games since Clemens did it in 1997.

Matching Clemens in anything is a huge deal.

Ray’s accomplishments this season have even given him an MLB mark to be proud of. He has 1,241 strikeouts in 1,001.2 innings of work in his career. That’s the most for any player through their first 1,000 innings.

Yu Darvish was the previous record-holder with 1,222 Ks in 1,000 IP. It’s no joke of a record.

Ray was traded to the Blue Jays last season and signed a one-year deal to stay with the team this year. It’s worked out great for both sides with the pitcher posting a 2.71 ERA, a career-best. He has regained the form that put him in the All-Star game with Arizona in 2017.

Toronto is 4.5 games out of the Wild Card in the American League. They are on a three-game winning streak with the Baltimore series set to continue on Tuesday.
