San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance replaced Jimmy Garoppolo in the first quarter against the Lions and wasted no time throwing a touchdown.

Welcome to the big show, Trey Lance. The No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft started Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions on the bench, but the San Francisco 49ers quarterback got his number called early on in Week 1.

After Jimmy Garoppolo struggled to begin play, Kyle Shanahan wasted no time in going to Lance. The rookie rewarded his head coach by giving his team a 7-0 lead thanks to this touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield. This is Lance’s first-career touchdown. What a special moment.

This is of course a throw that Lance will never forget. Fans didn’t expect to see him take the field so early on Sunday, but Lance took advantage of his opportunity and reminded folks of why he was not only such a stud in college, but also why he was worthy of being taken No. 3 overall.

That’s what 49ers fans are hoping is the first of many touchdowns for Lance while donning a San Francisco jersey. With his dual-threat abilities, folks are pumped up to see what Lance can do not only this campaign, but for years to come.

Unfortunately for Garoppolo, his inconsistent play continues to haunt him. Sunday’s start, which opened up with a fumble, is yet another reason why the San Francisco front office was so focused on taking a quarterback early in the draft.
