Packers opened the season with an embarrassing loss to the New Orleans Saints, but they’re still a top contender.

The Green Bay Packers got off to a disappointing start opening their season with a 38-3 loss against the New Orleans Saints. After a 2020 conference championship loss, a tumultuous off-season, and posts from Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams alluding to a last dance, all eyes were on the team expecting the beginning of a scorched earth season.

The Packers were unable to get a spark, let alone start a fire. They struggled on both sides of the ball, and left the game with very little to be happy about.

Despite the uninspiring performance, here are three reasons the Packers are still top contenders.

The Tampa Buccaneers lost Week 1 to the Saints last season.

In Brady’s debut with the Bucs, they lost to the Saints 34-23. So maybe a week one lost to the Saints is a good omen for teams super bowl chances.

Seriously, the Buccaneers loss their second 2020 regular season matchup to the Saints 38-3, the same score the Packers lost by yesterday. Both defeats preceding the Buccaneers eventual victory over the Saints in the divisional round of the playoffs.

If this tells us anything, it’s that the Saints are a good football team and a singular regular season loss doesn’t have much effect on your overall fate.

The NFC North isn’t impressive

The Packers and the rest of NFC North teams loss their opener. Even with the Packers losing in embarrassing fashion, they still have to be considered the favorites to win the division, giving them an automatic path to the playoffs.

The Lions are rebuilding, the Bears are starting the wrong quarterback, and the Vikings talented roster deliver inconsistent performances, as demonstrated by their overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Packers are equipped to maintain control over the division and make a playoff run.

The Packers still have Aaron Rodgers

Despite attempts to leave, Aaron Rodgers is still a Green Bay Packer, for now. That will always give the team a chance to compete. The reigning MVP didn’t have his best performance yesterday, throwing 133 yards, two interceptions and completing just 15-of-28 passes.

It’s unlikely he will turn in many more performances like that. With his number one receiver, Davante Adams, in a contract year, they’ll get the offense back on track fast. Their next opportunity will be next week on Monday Night Football against the Detroit lions.
