Super featherweights Maliek Montgomery and Aleem Jumakhonov put on a show on a rare PBC on FS1 Sunday showcase. Montgomery proved to have the right stuff.

Sept. 18 was a quiet boxing weekend, but Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) took advantage of the boxing lull with two weekend showcases. Maliek Montgomery and Aleem Jumakhonov were on deck on Sunday, Sept. 19, making the most of their headlining slot.

PBC put little-known contenders in their main events on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, lightweight Jose Valenzuela showed off his fast hands in a unanimous decision victory. On Sunday, it was Montgomery’s turn.

Montogomery (11-0, 10 KOs) came into his super featherweight matchup with gaudy numbers for a prospect, but his opposition was weak. Jumakhonov (9-4-2, 5 KOs) was a sizeable step up for Montgomery, and he gave him a hard time.

Still, Montgomery passed the test and scored a unanimous decision victory over Jumakhonov. The scores were more expansive than they should have been, but Montgomery showed a stout chin, fast and heavy hands, and some stamina too.

Montgomery had never been past round 4 before stepping in with Jumakhonov. He had never been in a scheduled eight-round fight but was thrown into the deep end against Jumakhonov in a 10-rounder.

Montgomery’s stamina held up and carried him through the finish line of a grueling fight.

Montgomery exploded with activity in the first few rounds, but Jumakhonov matched his energy in rounds 3, 4, and 5. Jumakhonov sent Montgomery’s mouthpiece flying in round 4, but Montgomery wasn’t discouraged.

Montgomery fought out of orthodox and southpaw stances, and he flowed with a steady stream of punches. He wore Jumakhonov down and had the doctor and referee taking a close look at Jumakhonov between rounds 8 and 9.

They let the fight continue, and Jumakhonov came out with a flurry of punches in round 9. Montgomery weathered the brief storm and controlled the fight to the end.

Montgomery remains undefeated and gained a lot of fans and attention with his performance against Jumakhonov.
