Kansas City Chiefs fans are convinced the Los Angeles Chargers got away with pass interference on Patrick Mahomes’ final heave to the end zone.

The Chargers went toe to toe with the defending AFC champions, turning over Mahomes on two separate occasions, while Justin Herbert threw for four touchdowns of his own. Not only did Herbert out-duel Mahomes, the Chargers’ defense was also able to stand tall when called upon.

But did they have some help from the officials?

Chiefs fans complained for a last-second pass interference call on the Chargers, as there was plenty of contact in the end zone on Mahomes’ Hail Mary.

Chiefs: Did Chargers get away with pass interference?

There’s little doubt Travis Kelce had to deal with some extra contact in the end zone, but asking for that kind of call in the final seconds is essentially hoping the officials will interfere to decide the outcome of a game.

In that situation, they simply aren’t going to make that call. It’s a dirty secret of those who call professional football games for a living — don’t be the deciding factor, unless it’s obvious.

In this case, the Chargers’ “contact” wasn’t clear. There were too many bodies to make such a decision, barring instant replay, which isn’t allowed in this situation.

In the end, the Chiefs shot themselves in the foot on far too many occasions to claim victory. Mahomes had two interceptions, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s fumble issues continues into Week 3.

That’s what lost this game for the Chiefs. Not a desperate no-call with no time on the clock.
