If the Kansas City Chiefs want to beat Tom Brady and the reigning Super Bowl Champions, they’ll need to sign Stephon Gilmore.

It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs defense has struggled to start the season. It’s also no secret that’s a common occurrence for coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s unit. But after a 2-2 start, the margin for error is increasingly smaller.

The Chiefs offense is operating, as usual, at an unbelievable level. They’re ranked first in offensive DVOA and lead the NFL in EPA per play. They’ll carry on putting up points in bunches, but the defense also ranks dead last in EPA per play. They’re hemorrhaging points at an alarming rate. And the secondary needs help too, especially if they want a rematch with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl.

If the Chiefs sign Stephon Gilmore, they’d finally beat Tom Brady in a big game

That means they need to sign Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore is set to be released by the New England Patriots after the two parties failed to reach middle ground on a restructured contract. So, Gilmore is now on the market and needs a new home. Enter the Chiefs.

Adding him to the secondary would give the Chiefs a top-five player at his position and someone who knows Brady very well. The two spent three years together in New England and a by-product of that is Gilmore will know who to play Brady more than most cornerbacks in the league. After all, that’s a lot of time spent defending his passes in practice.

The Chiefs also have very little depth at cornerback, and even though Gilmore will take a few weeks to get up to speed, signing him is a move for the long haul. Having the former Defensive Player of the Year in the secondary is exactly what the Chiefs need to beat Brady if they meet in the Super Bowl.
