Russell Wilson’s finger injury looks bad on Thursday Night Football, but the thought process remained that he could tough it out in a few weeks. Not so fast my friends.

Geno Smith looms behind Wilson, though he is a significant step down from the quality of quarterback the Wisconsin and NC State product offers Seattle. Frankly, any backup would be a step down.

Wilson is expected to miss significant time, per ESPN”s Jeremy Fowler. The Seahawks are even preparing as if Wilson will have to undergo surgery.

“Sources: Seahawks are bracing for Russell Wilson to miss at least a month and possibly 6-8 weeks with his ruptured middle-finger tendon that likely requires surgery. Seattle thinking about Wilson’s long-term health. Barring an unexpectedly swift recovery, it’s Geno Smith’s show,” Fowler reported.

Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson out long-term

There is no ideal time for an injury to a team’s starting quarterback. For Pete Carroll and Co., this means Wilson will miss the heart of the Seahawks season.

Seattle is in arguably the toughest division in all of football, and they’re already behind the eight ball. The Seahawks just lost to the Rams to fall to 2-3. LA, meanwhile, is 4-1 and a solid second place behind the Arizona Cardinals, who boat-raced them just a week ago.

The Cardinals remain an undefeated force. The Rams loom just one game behind them, and the San Francisco 49ers are still a solid playoff-caliber team at 2-2. Though San Francisco is dealing with their own injuries at the QB position with Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance would appear a much more capable player than Smith at this juncture.

Safe to say, the Seahawks have some serious questions to answer, and then some.
