Reactions to Tyson Fury beating Deontay Wilder in a highly-entertaining boxing war

As referenced in the subtitle to their showdown, Tyson Fury can once and for all say he won the rivalry with Deontay Wilder and can arguably lay claim to the title of the best heavyweight in the boxing world today.

In one of the greatest fights the boxing world has seen in 2021 — perhaps one of the greatest heavyweight boxing fights we’ve seen in the 2000s — Fury knocked Wilder out in the 11th round to retain the WBC heavyweight championship.

The two first met in December 2018. At the time, Wilder had defended the WBC title seven straight times since winning it from Bermane Stiverne in January 2015.

Meanwhile, Fury had won the WBA (Super), IBF and WBO heavyweight titles from Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015 but he lost them outside the ring — the IBF stripped Fury after a rematch clause with Klitschko prevented him from fighting Vyacheslav Glazkov, and Fury vacated the other titles due to testing positive for cocaine as part of a battle with depression and alcoholism.

Fury returned in April 2018 with a TKO of Sefer Seferi and he scored a decision over Francesco Pianeta in August 2018.

Their first fight was competitive, with Wilder landing some power shots over 12 rounds but mostly struggling to follow up, as Fury kept distance and troubled him. Wilder knocked Fury down in the ninth and 12th rounds, however, and the fight was ultimately scored a split draw.

After both men earned a pair of victories in 2019, they rematched in February 2020. This time, Fury completed dominated Wilder over seven rounds en route to a corner stoppage victory, making Fury the WBC heavyweight champion.

Wilder came out aggressive, trying to get on the front foot right away and set the pace and tone of the fight. But Fury landed a sharp one-two at the end of the first and was the better, and more aggressive, boxer in the second round.

Wilder tried to land the big right hand throughout the third round, but Fury took it and managed to land a right hand of his own to knock Wilder down late in the round. Wilder, however, managed to get back in the fight and knock Fury down twice in the fourth round.

After a quieter round five with both men hurt and a bit fatigued, the dirty boxing seemed to increase in the sixth round, with both men landing inside — and both men looking tired, only to light the other one up.

The seventh saw more back-and-forth action, but Wilder appeared to suffer more damage, at one point nearly being knocked into the ropes. Fury landed more shots that wobbled Wilder a bit in the eighth. Wilder landed hard in the ninth, but he looked exhausted compared to Fury and needed a way to get back into the fight.

Fury landed a hard right to the body in the 10th round to knock Wilder down for the second time in the fight. The round was clearly Fury’s, but Wilder landed several hard shots to the head before the bell.

Fury swarmed Wilder once again in the 11th and dropped him once more with a one-two, stopping the fight for good.
