The Chicago Sky claimed its first championship in thrilling fashion thanks to a comeback win over the Phoenix Mercury Sunday.

For the first time in team history, the Chicago Sky has claimed a championship. A thrilling comeback over the Phoenix Mercury led to an 80-76 win, which secured a WNBA Finals series win for the Sky.

This win seemed unlikely given how Chicago was playing early on, but thanks to a late surge in the fourth quarter, a quarter in which the Sky was able to outscore the Mercury, 26-11, Chicago is taking home its first title.

Of course, given the historic nature of this win and what it means to players like Candace Parker, WNBA Twitter went crazy.

The Chicago Sky completed a remarkable comeback over the Phoenix Mercury Sunday

The win itself was a fairly improbable one, but the entire championship run that Chicago just made was even more unlikely.

Chicago really didn’t look all that impressive through most of the regular season, finishing at No. 6 in the standings and only managing to go 16-16. But that didn’t matter because once it got to the postseason, Chicago was able to win consistently.

Of course, this and the championship are huge for Parker, who joined the Sky this season.

This sort of win and this title are huge for a franchise that was founded 16 years ago. Chicago fans waited patiently to see the Sky take home a title and it finally happened. Parker joining this team and providing veteran leadership certainly helped this team get to this point.

Congrats to the Sky on the first WNBA Finals win in franchise history.
