Tennessee fans, and head coach Josh Heupel, were outraged over a costly error by the referees in overtime of the Music City Bowl.

The Tennessee Volunteers received the ultimate gut punch in the 2021 Music City Bowl on Thursday. On fourth-and-goal play at Purdue’s one-yard line in overtime, Jaylen Wright ran to the right and seemingly was stopped. Yet, he was on top of the Purdue defender and put the ball over the goal line. However, the referees ruled that Tennessee was down short of the end zone, and gave possession to Purdue.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel, like many Tennessee fans watching the game at Nissan Stadium or at home, was beside himself when he received an explanation from the on-field official.

Purdue capitalized on the turnover on downs, as Mitchell Fineran nailed a 36-yard field goal to clinch the 48-45 victory.

It was a series of unfortunate events late in the Music City Bowl. You can not gloss over the final drive, in which Tennessee had the chance to kick a game-winning field goal in the closing seconds of regulation. But, some questionable clock management and play-calling by Heupel doomed them, as Chase McGrath’s 56-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, sending the game to overtime.

It was a bad New Year’s Eve Eve for Tennessee and its fanbase.
