One ESPN host believes Georgia losing the SEC Championship game to Alabama might have been the best thing to happen to the Dawgs.

ESPN’s Peter Burns thinks if Georgia goes on to win the national title, college football fans will look back on the SEC Championship game loss to Alabama as the best thing that could have ever happened to them.

After getting embarrassed in Atlanta in early December, Dawg Nation had to wear yet another awful loss to the Crimson Tide through the holiday season. The Crimson Tide went on to defeat the last two undefeated teams in college football to get back to the national championship. It is only fitting their opponent meeting them up in Indianapolis will be the same Georgia team.

Alabama may have won the conference championship game a few weeks ago, but nobody in their right mind wants to play Georgia twice in one season, not even Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.

Georgia’s loss to Alabama in SEC Championship may be a blessing in disguise

It is incredibly difficult to beat the same team twice in a calendar year. That is what it will take for the Crimson Tide to repeat as national champions. As for Georgia, the Dawgs are one win away from finally making 1980 a thing of the past. The question remains if Kirby Smart’s team will finally defeat the Evil Empire for the first time since 2007. That is what is at stake in Indianapolis.

Perhaps the only team in college football that can match Alabama from a talent perspective is Georgia. Just look at how well these two programs have recruited over the last several years. Most importantly, what are the chances Alabama’s best game of the season was also Georgia’s worst? Anticipate a regression to the mean on both sides in this rematch.

One of the best things about college football is most teams can drop a game and still have a chance to compete for a national title. While navigating a season to perfection is the ideal paradigm, having the ability to learn from a heart-breaking loss and apply those lessons going forward cannot be overstated. Playing with a chip on their shoulder, Georgia has a real chance.

It is only fitting that Georgia much beat arch-nemesis Alabama to win a national championship.
