Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady could be close to a retirement announcement, per Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

At this time, CBS is the only outlet reporting Brady’s retirement.

At 44 years old, Brady and the Buccaneers were eliminated by the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round. Given Brady’s accomplishments and relative individual success this season, his announcement that last weekend was his final game — should that be the case — would be a relative surprise despite his age.

Brady is undeniably the best quarterback to ever play the game. His individual and team accomplishments back that up. Heck, he even proved he could make the most of his surroundings outside of New England, as he took his talents to Tampa Bay (brought Gronk with him) and won a Super Bowl.

That was the seventh Super Bowl victory of his illustrious career.

Will Tom Brady retire?

Per La Canfora, sources close to Brady indicate that he’s ready to retire.

“He is very respectful of the game, and has great respect for the Tampa organization and all they have done for him,” said one source close to the quarterback, per CBS. “He understands the ramifications that this decision would have on the team moving forward, and he would never want to do anything to upstage the playoffs. Whatever he decides, I’d expect he announces it soon.”

Brady once joked about playing until he was 50, but the all-time great must know that the end is coming soon. At 44 years old, Brady looked rather human in the playoffs. He completed just 55 percent of his passes against the Rams, for one touchdown and one interception.

Whenever Brady does call it quits, he’ll be celebrated by the entire football community, even those who hated him for so many years.

If anything, from the league’s perspective, the end to Brady’s dominant run is worth celebrating.
