Round 2: Lewis Cine

The Commanders’ defense struggled mightily last season and the lack of production from their safeties was a big, contributing factor. That’s why Washington should look to add a thumper like Cine when they go on the clock in Round 2.

The former Georgia star isn’t going to be a great center fielder at the next level, but he will be an impact guy if he’s permitted to line up close to the line of scrimmage and attack the run. Washington can really benefit from the toughness and athleticism he can provide from his spot on the field.

Rivera could pound the table for an impact linebacker at this spot but the board just breaks better to nab a high-quality safety in the second round. Don’t be shocked if Washington reaches for an impact speed linebacker at this spot even if he doesn’t represent good value.

Safety isn’t the most glamorous position in the modern NFL, but last year Washington learned just how hard it is to field a quality defense without quality options in the back line. Cine can start right away and he’ll also give the team a boost in special teams. It’s good, but not great value from this spot in the draft.
