Patrick Mahomes covets a veteran wide receiver to pair with speedster Tyreek Hill and all-world tight end Travis Kelce to round out the Kansas City Chiefs receiving corps.

With Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson hitting NFL free agency, Patrick Mahomes has made it a point to request a third go-to receiving option as a part of the Kansas City Chiefs‘ offseason plans.

Tony Pauline of The Pro Football Network reported last week “the Chiefs enter the offseason with a need at [wide receiver], and word is Patrick Mahomes has voiced his desire for the team to sign a veteran free agent receiver rather than acquire one through the draft.”

While Kansas City has some available cap space, $11.5 million will not be enough to sign someone Mahomes would want to throw the ball to and have enough available capital to sign a full 2022 NFL Draft class. General manager Brett Veach may be a wizard with the salary cap, but Mahomes and others will have to agree to some contract restructuring to free up enough space.

A handful of wide receivers the Chiefs could pursue in free agency include Odell Beckham Jr. (Los Angeles Rams), Chris Godwin (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Allen Robinson (Chicago Bears), JuJu Smith-Schuster (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Mike Williams (Los Angeles Chargers).

They could also be in the market to either trade for or wait until the Dallas Cowboys release Amari Cooper in a matter of days.

The Chiefs are fortunate in that they do not have a lot of holes, to begin with, so they can look to spend big on a tertiary receiving target. Of course, that will require freeing up some cap space. Though Davante Adams (Green Bay Packers) is the best player regardless of position hitting NFL free agency, the Chiefs are in the market to add a low-end No. 1 or a high-end No. 2 wide receiver.

Of the five free agents listed above, Robinson would be a fantastic fit. He is a different receiver from Hill and has been playing in quarterbacking purgatory since his days at Penn State. One would think he would prioritize going to a situation with a proven star quarterback. The question is if the Chiefs prefer a wide receiver like Beckham, Godwin, Smith-Schuster or Williams over him.

As for Cooper, he might climb to the top of the list if he does hit the market upon being released. He is still a No. 1 wide receiver but has played with an emerging one alongside CeeDee Lamb in Dallas. His entry into the free-agent receiver market will certainly shake things up. The good news for the Chiefs is all six of these candidates should suffice exactly what Mahomes is looking for.

It is not a matter of if, but a matter of how, the Chiefs free up enough money to play in free agency.
