The Seattle Seahawks brought quarterback Geno Smith back on a one-year contract. Does this officially shut the door on the team trading for Baker Mayfield?

The Seattle Seahawks made the decision to trade star quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in exchange for draft picks and players. As of this writing, the Seahawks do not have a set-in-stone solution under center with Drew Lock slotted in as the QB1 following the Broncos trade.

On Thursday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Seahawks have re-signed quarterback Geno Smith to a one-year deal, worth $7 million.

With this signing, does this officially check the Seahawks off of the list of potential landing spots for Baker Mayfield?

Seahawks: Does re-signing Geno Smith shut the door on adding Baker Mayfield?

No, the Smith signing does not take the Seahawks out of the running for Mayfield. What could make Seattle a non-option for Mayfield is if they select a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Seahawks received the No. 9 overall pick from the Broncos in the trade for Wilson. While it is entirely possible that the team could select a quarterback with that selection, they could also draft a prospect on Day 2 of the event.

Mayfield, the 2018 first-overall selection by the Cleveland Browns, demanded a trade after the team pursued Deshaun Watson. That happened when the Browns were reportedly told they were out of the running for Watson. Yet, that all changed, as Cleveland traded a bevy of draft capital to the Houston Texans in exchange for Watson, to whom they gave a five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed contract to.

Since then, Mayfield has to land with a new team. This week, Mayfield appeared on the “Ya Neva Know Podcast” and was asked which team he thinks he will play next. Mayfield called the Seahawks “the most likely option.”

While the Seahawks signed Smith, the door is not really closed on bringing in Mayfield. However, it could very well be closed shut if the Seahawks were to draft a quarterback at the end of the month.
