Yankees fans gave detractors all of the ammo they could want on Saturday after the way they acted against the Guardians following a walk-off win.

It should’ve been a great moment at Yankee Stadium for New York Yankees fans to enjoy on Saturday afternoon. The club went into the bottom of the ninth of their day game against the Cleveland Guardians trailing 4-3 and trying to claw out a win.

First, an Isaiah Kiner-Falefa double ensured there would be extra innings at minimum by driving in a run. But then, Gleyber Torres was able to say “no thanks” to free baseball as he hit a single to right field that gave New York the 5-4 win.

Instead of basking in the victory and a great early-season moment, though, Yankees fans couldn’t help themselves as they started throwing trash onto the field at Guardians players, causing quite a ruckus.

As you can see in the above video, the Cleveland players were less than pleased with the reaction from Yankees fans. In fact, Myles Straw even climbed up the wall to have a word with at least one fan (though likely more than just the one).

Moreover, Oscar Mercado, who appeared to be the intended target of some of the trash throwing, had to be restrained by teammates and officials from going after the fans.

It feels as if the baseball world has been a bit unhinged in recent days. Whether it was a JuCo pitcher leveling an opposing hitter, an all-out brawl in the minor leagues, or now this, fans and players alike need to get their act together.

More importantly, if Yankees fans want to change any negative perceptions that are certainly out there about them, this definitely isn’t the way to go about it.
