White Sox: Vince Velasquez won’t be on the roster past July 1

Soon-to-be 30-year-old Vince Velasquez has bounced around the league a bit over the course of his eight year big-league career, currently operating as a swingman for his fourth team, the White Sox.

A starter in seven of his eight appearances this season, Velasquez is 2-3 with a 5.30 ERA, 5.10 FIP and 74 ERA+. His strikeouts are down to 8.3 per-nine innings, the lowest mark he’s ever posted in his career. Walks and home runs have been an issue for him as well as he has posted a 3.5 and 1.8 BB and HR/9 respectively.

After a promising showing in 2016 with the Phillies in which he went 8-6 with a 4.12 ERA across 24 starts, Velasquez has gradually gotten worse over time and is nothing more than a warm body in the dugout for these Chicago White Sox.

Like Reese McGuire, Velasquez is out of minor league options and would likely be DFA’d and released by the White Sox in the event that the club decides to cut bait. The depth in the minor league system is not super deep when looking at potential replacements for Velasquez’s roster spot but young righty Davis Martin jumps out as one candidate who could get that call.
