Watch: Jose Altuve signs autographs for everyone, even Yankee fans
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve is among the most hated players in all of baseball. Yet, he’s dedicated to growing the game.
Altuve’s role in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal, in which they used an illegal scheme, a camera in center field and a garbage can to relay pitches mid at-bat, has made him the subject of fan vitriol in opposing ballparks for the last several seasons.
That was then, and this is now. Altuve will forever be booed in New York. The Yankees were one of the teams defeated by Houston in that 2017 run.
Yet, Altuve remains dedicated to growing the game, especially with young fans. He’s an All-Star level talent, and therefore it’s his responsibility to engage with fans on a regular basis. He continued that approach — the right approach, I might add — in the Bronx on Thursday.
Astros: Joe Altuve signs baseballs for Yankees fans
The series brings with it much anticipation, as the Yanks and Astros are considered the two best teams in the American League by most pundits. The records speak for themselves.
It’s another test for the team in pinstripes, who enters the day on record pace, at 51-18. The Yanks played quite well in their road series against both the Blue Jays and Rays, but some home cooking against Houston would be the cherry on top.
We’ll see what Altuve and Co. have to say about that starting Thursday night.
