Bruno Cappelozza and Matheus Scheffel met in the main event of PFL 5.
PFL’s dream heavyweight match ended in earnest earlier in the night when Renan Ferreira lost to Klidson Abreu. Bruno Cappelozza and Ferreira were on a collision course to a major heavyweight fight during PFL’s 2022 season but Ferreira’s loss derailed that. Could Cappelozza avoid the same fate against Matheus Scheffel?
The answer is no, Scheffel got a major upset against Cappelozza, winning by unanimous decision.
The first round wasn’t Cappelozza’s at all, with Scheffel walking back the 2021 heavyweight winner and landing some major strikes. Round two was a lot less exciting with both men landing minor strikes. While round three started off promising, both men were a lot less aggressive than they were in round one, with Scheffel easily controlling the action.
Bruno Cappelozza’s loss is a huge hit to PFL
It can’t be stated just how rough the loss to Cappelozza was to PFL’s image. He was one of the few “home-grown” guys on the brand that could attract new fans. His striking prowess and power made him someone that people will want to see. While a single loss isn’t going to end his career, it does hurt his image and in turn, PFL’s as well, due to many expecting Cappelozza to walk through the 2022 regular season undefeated heading into the playoffs.
