2) Braves trade deadline surprise: Spending big assets to acquire David Bednar

The Braves received some devastating news in regards to closer Kenley Jansen. He’ll be out of action due to an irregular heartbeat. It’s a scary situation far greater than many other reasons why we see players land on the IL.

In his absence, the Braves should be out there looking to make a move for another closer option. One of the best guys that should be available for trade talks is David Bednar.

The Pittsburgh Pirates closer would be a huge addition to the Braves. He’s also more than a one-year rental. Because Jansen is signed to only a one-year deal, Bednar would be the clear favorite to finish off games for Atlanta next season and beyond.

Needless to say, the Pirates could ask for something just short of a king’s ransom for this high-priced yet talented closer who has shown nothing but positive signs in the big leagues. Atlanta would be wise to inquire about the possibility of also landing Bryan Reynolds in the deal, but would probably have to settle for Bednar considering the price tag on each.

If it’s not Bednar, the Braves have a few alternatives to look at but he should be the main focus.
