Cardinals could trade for Noah Syndergaard

Since arriving in Triple-A in May, Paul DeJong does seem to have found his swing again.  After 38 games,  he is slashing .224/.270/.487 with an OPS of .757, 11 home runs, 26 runs, and 36 RBI.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals have gotten tremendous production out of Tommy Edman at shortstop and rookie Nolan Gorman is excelling at second base. They are getting good help out of Brendan Donovan at both positions, as well. Mozeliak said that due to this, DeJong has found himself in a Wally Pipp situation – Lou Gehrig became the New York Yankees’ first basemen and the expense of Pipp.

DeJong is in the midst of a six-year, $26 million contract that ends in 2023, and has options for 2024 and 2025.

It would be interesting to see the Cardinals trade DeJong for Noah Syndergaard.

Syndergaard has a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels worth $21 million. He is 4-6 with the struggling Angels this season. In 11 games started, he’s thrown 58.1 innings with a 3.86 ERA. Syndergaard’s pitches have induced 47.6% grounders.

Imagine how much better Syndergaard’s record and performance would be with a Gold Glove offense behind him. Having Paul Goldschmidt, Tommy Edman, Nolan Arenado, and the company behind him could be very beneficial

The Cardinals could use Syndergaard’s veteran arm and presence, while the Angels could use DeJong’s presence, as well as bat and skills at shortstop. And, if he likes it in St. Louis, they could always make their arrangement a little more long-term.
