Open Championship start time: What time does The Open start in the US?

If you plan to watch the entirety of the 150th Open Championship, you better take a nap on Wednesday and have a pot of coffee ready to go.

I love golf as much as the next guy, but a 1:35 tee time seems a bit extreme, doesn’t it? No, I’m not talking about 1:35 in the afternoon, I mean 1:35 in the morning. Yep, that’s when the trio of Paul Lawrie, Webb Simpson, and Min Woo Lee will tee it up at the 150th Open Championship.

Most of us in the United States will be asleep when the first threesome gets things started at the Old Course at St. Andrews, but what may be the witching hour for us here in the US is sunup across the pond.

What time does The Open Championship start in America?

Believe it or not folks, but sunrise over in Scotland on Thursday morning when the tournament kicks off will be at about 4:45 AM local time. That means that the sun will be coming up and revealing the refined beauty of the Old Course at St. Andrews just before the clock hits midnight here in the states.

The first three golfers set to begin the Open Championship will commence play at 6:35 a.m. local time, which is 1:35 a.m. ET. For our friends out on the west coast, it’ll technically still be Wednesday night when the British Open gets underway.

But who wouldn’t want to wake up to major championship golf being played while you’re listening to the morning traffic report or a hearty enjoying breakfast? For early risers like myself, I’ll be able to watch Justin Thomas, Will Zalatoris, Rory McIlroy and defending champion Collin Morikawa. All four should be on the course by 5:30 a.m. ET.

If you’re one who likes to sleep in, don’t fret. Dustin Johnson and Scottie Scheffler don’t tee off until after 8:00 a.m. If you’re ready to see Tiger Woods return to action, be sure to set your alarm for about 9:30 a.m. ET, that should give you plenty of time to brush your teeth, grab a coffee, and watch the three-time Open champion tee it on No. 1 at St. Andrews.

The last trio will begin play in Round 1 just before lunchtime in New York City. Lars Van Meijel, Jack Floydd, and Ronan Mullarney will begin their chase for golf’s oldest major just after 11:15 AM on the east coast.

Get a good night’s sleep on Wednesday and be prepared for wall-to-wall golf action from the Old Course at St. Andrews from the time you wake up until shortly before supper time. And guess what? You’ll get to do it all over again on Friday morning.
