The New York Yankees missed out trading for Luis Castillo, and the Seattle Mariners will look to rub salt in Brian Cashman’s wounds.

The Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners pulled off a blockbuster trade on Friday night. The Reds sent Luis Castillo to the Mariners in exchange for four minor league prospects including shortstop Noelvi Marte.

Missing out on Castillo were a host of teams including, of course, the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers had been rumored to be after Castillo for weeks and all signs pointed to Brian Cashman finally getting his guy.

But it was not to be. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, New York’s hesitance to include shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe in a trade for Luis Castillo may have cost the Yankees a chance to land the Reds starter.

Mariners set to rub salt in the Yankees wounds with Luis Castillo’s next start.

Luis Castillo last pitched for the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday evening versus the Miami Marlins. With Cincinnati employing a six-man starting rotation, Castillo’s next start should be slated for next Tuesday.

Guess who the Seattle Mariners play on Tuesday night? You got it, the New York Yankees. The M’s go on the road next week and will take on the Yanks in the Bronx with Castillo very likely to pitch on Tuesday night.

Castillo is no stranger to pitching in New York. The right-hander dominated New York earlier this season while playing for the Reds. On July 14th, Castillo went seven superb innings, striking out eight Yankees hitters and allowing just one earned run.

Mariners fans should expect a similar performance from Luis Castillo this coming week when he toes the rubber against the best team in baseball. Seattle outbid New York at the trade deadline and they’ll get so see if their acquisition pays off. The Yanks will then make a trip out west the following week as the M’s play host for three games at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
