David Ross: Cubs trade rumors taking their toll on Willson Contreras

While Willson Contreras may play for the Chicago Cubs, he’s spent the majority of the last two seasons on the trade block. 

That sort of uncertainty for that length of time can break even the greatest of competitors, and that seems to be the case with Contreras.

While still featuring capable numbers on the season, Contreras has gone on a decent slump of late. Manager David Ross addressed the source directly, stating that the trade rumors are finally starting to take a toll.

Contreras’ struggles haven’t impact his overall value. Chicago is demanding a king’s ransom for their All-Star backstop, something they have thus far struggled to acquire. The matters working against Contreras are out of his control — he’s on the last year of his contract, and will likely elect free agency after the season barring an unforeseen extension with whatever team trades for him.

The Mets, Padres or Astros make the most sense for Contreras. All three are competitors and outside the Cubs division, thus ensuring such a move doesn’t come back to bite them.

New York’s uncertainty at the position is well-documented, and the return of James McCann shouldn’t inspire too much confidence.

As well liked as Martin Maldonado is in the Astros organization, he hits under the Mendoza line.

San Diego is pursuing a big bat and may look at Contreras as a Juan Soto backup plan. Either way, Chicago is certainly looking at the likes of Robert Hassell III in San Diego’s farm system as a potential get.

Both Contreras and Ian Happ have said goodbye to Wrigley Field, and will likely be traded by Aug. 2’s deadline, thus ending the never-ending circus that was giving away the spare parts of a World Series contender.
