Giants Rumors: They might not be sellers but buyers?

At 51-51, the Giants are on the precipice of the playoff race while also battling against selling at the MLB trade deadline. They are 4 games out of a Wild Card spot. For days now, it’s been widely believed that the Giants would indeed sell at the Trade Deadline after a 7-game losing streak. However, they took 3 of 4 games from the rebuilding Cubs and now might buy. That’s how it sounds according to MLB Insider Mark Feinsand.

Giants Rumors: Why would they buy at the deadline?

This does mesh with another report earlier today about the Giants being dark horse contenders for Juan Soto. While it’s unlikely they get Soto, it does match up with Feinsand’s report that the Bay Area team might actually buy and push for the playoffs. They have an aging team that has perhaps one more playoff chase in them.

This makes sense as to why the Giants want to push for the playoffs one last time before having to push towards a major youth movement. The Giants have a strong rotation led by Logan Webb and Carlos Rodon.

Joc Pederson was an All-Star this year. Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt still have some bats left in them. Perhaps the biggest need is for a shortstop/2nd baseman and an outfielder. There comes the fit for Juan Soto.

The Giants’ defense is pretty awful, but with excellent pitching and a strong offense, it can be overcome. I’m not saying the Giants should buy for a chance at one more playoff run. Yet, it could happen and make sense. If the Giants get any combination of Ian Happ, David Robertson, Willson Contreras, Juan Soto, Brandon Drury, or JD Martinez, then this would be a very successful deadline for them.

We’ll find out soon, in roughly 20 or so hours, what the Giants ultimately decide to do at the trade deadline. For now, these Giants rumors are very fun to think about, and wonder if they can pull off a trade for a big whopper like Juan Soto.
