The San Diego Padres already got Juan Soto, Josh Bell, and Brandon Carpenter at the trade deadline. Yet, there are reinforcements on the way.

The San Diego Padres had a mission at the trade deadline, and that was to drastically improve their roster. They did just that, acquiring closer Josh Hader, utility man Brandon Drury, first baseman Josh Bell, and superstar outfielder Juan Soto. Just when you thought the Padres could not get in any better shape, one player is nearing his return.

On Saturday, star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is beginning his rehab assignment on Saturday with Double-A San Antonio. Tatis will be batting leadoff in the game.

Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr. to begin rehab assignment on Saturday

The expectation is that Tatis will play shortstop, center field, and designated hitter during his rehab assignment.

Tatis has been sidelined for the entirety of the 2022 campaign after suffering a fractured left wrist. He underwent surgery to repair the scaphoid bone back in mid-March and was given a three-month recovery timeline.

Last season, Tatis suffered a left shoulder subluxation early in the year but managed to play in 150 games.

Through that span of games in 2021, Tatis slashed .282/.364/.611 while recording a league-high 42 home runs, 97 RBI, 99 runs scored, and 135 hits. He was named NL All-Star team and finished third in NL MVP voting.

Sure, the Padres are stacked as it is with the additions they have made at the trade deadline, but getting Tatis back will be pivotal, as they try to make a push for a postseason berth for the second time in three years.
