2) Cubs offseason predictions: Josh Bell is a first baseman Chicago could use

First base is an interesting position across the MLB landscape. The demand for quality first basemen can change day-to-day. There’s never really a reason to overpay for one because of how many are actually out there and available.

Josh Bell can do himself a lot of favors before he reaches free agency by finishing strong with the San Diego Padres. Dealt alongside Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals this summer, the market for him might not be too deep considering how many clubs already have a first baseman on the roster. The Cubs are one of those teams with no clear answer at the position. They should have a close eye on Bell already.

The Cubs have had chances to go in a couple of different directions at the position. They were a previous landing spot for Eric Hosmer prior to him eventually landing with the Red Sox earlier this month. Dominic Smith of the New York Mets has been another name mentioned. However, he’s far less proven and more of a project.

The Cubs can show their fans they’re serious by signing Bell. He’d give the offense some more potency and be a capable slugger they can put in the middle of their order. A terrific OBP guy throughout his career, he won’t hit for the same power as a couple of other first basemen, but he can offer Chicago some clogged base paths.
