New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Maye was arrested on Thursday morning for aggravated assault with a firearm according to Nick Underhill.

UPDATE: This post was updated at 3:10 PM ET to reflect details of the police report that came out.

The New Orleans Saints made a move to trade away safety/slot cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson earlier this week, and now more trouble is brewing with their safety group. Marcus Maye was arrested on Thursday morning for aggravated assault with a firearm according to independent Saints beat writer Nick Underhill.

Shortly after this news broke, Maye’s attorney said that Maye denies the allegations and indicated it was a motor vehicle incident.

According to the police report, Maye was involved in a road rage incident in Metairie. Allegedly, he pointed a firearm at another vehicle.

Maye also had a court date upcoming in November for a DUI that took place in 2021:

The 2021 DUI took place in Florida.

The outcome for an arrest like this can vary widely, but at the very least you’d expect Maye to miss some, if not all, of the 2022 season. That said, information is still coming out.

Saints defensive depth has rapidly depleted in the last few days

Assuming Maye will be unavailable for the foreseeable future, a position of strength for the Saints has quickly been depleted. This may force a second-string secondary defender like Bradley Roby or J.T. Gray up into the starter position.

The Saints are an unfortunate example that depth can disappear in an instant.

The Saints signed Maye this offseason after several years with the Jets. The contract included $15MM in guaranteed money that may be in question if he is suspended for under the personal conduct policy. Both his DUI and this new incident could feasibly have brought the conduct policy into play, depending on the outcomes.

The Saints are also awaiting the outcome of an incident stemming from Alvin Kamara’s battery charge during Pro Bowl weekend in 2022 which could result in a conduct suspension.
