San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance — previously heralded as the future face of the franchise — was carted off the field against the Seahawks.

Lance was replaced by Jimmy Garoppolo, which is an insurance policy San Francisco is now thrilled to have. Jimmy G was floated in trade rumors all offseason, but agreed to a restructured contract to stay with the 49ers.

The injury didn’t appear to be all that serious in the moment, as Lance ran the ball for a short gain and was helped to his feet. However, he quickly fell to the turf in pain, and was carted off with an air cast on his leg.

Lance couldn’t put any weight on his leg in the aftermath of his injury, which surely isn’t a good sign.

As for Garoppolo, assuming he can stay healthy he is a stable enough veteran to right the ship. It’s easy to forget Kyle Shanahan’s bunch made the Super Bowl with Garoppolo at the helm.

While there’s no guarantee Jimmy G will be as successful this time around, there’s a reason the Niners trust him. Garoppolo was arguably the most well-respected backup quarterback in the league. Heck, he would’ve been a starter elsewhere were it not for his previous contract.

The former first-round pick struggled in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears, completing just 46.4 percent of his passes for 164 yards and an interception.

However, given the monsoon at Solider Field, most fans and pundits gave Lance the benefit of the doubt.

Per Adam Schefter, Lance will undergo season-ending surgery on his ankle.

The 49ers will ride with Jimmy Garoppolo from here on out.
