Former Alabama WR calls BS on death of Nick Saban’s Alabama dynasty
Former Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith isn’t buying the idea of Nick Saban and his dynasty being in trouble after a rough 2022 season.
Is the Alabama football juggernaut dead? Is Nick Saban finished?
DeVonta Smith isn’t convinced.
During an interview with The Spun, the former Alabama wide receiver and now-Eagles star addressed the situation in Tuscaloosa this season with the Crimson Tide suffering a second loss.
DeVonta Smith responds to Alabama football’s 2022 struggles
It was certainly disappointing to see Bama fall to LSU in an upset last Saturday.
“Alabama is the standard for college football. You know how high the bar is set when you’re there,” Smith said. “You need to bring your best effort day in, day out. You can’t just play around there.”
However, Smith doesn’t see that loss as a sign of impending doom for the program.
“I mean things happen. We can’t sit here and act like other teams don’t have good athletes and good players. It’s the SEC, anyone can go out there and win any given game,” Smith said.
It’s unusual to see Alabama with two losses at this point in the season. Their hopes of competing for the SEC title or College Football Playoff are slim to none.
Even so, Smith is right. Burying the dynasty feels very premature considering they’ve suffered two losses to Top 10 teams by a combined four points. One of those losses was in overtime. These aren’t the kinds of missteps that amount to falling off a cliff. The team is one or two plays away from being undefeated.
Alabama had two losses in 2019 and came back the next year to win a national title. Smith led the way as the Heisman Trophy winner that season.
Every time people doubt Saban, he proves them wrong.
