Heading into rivalry weekend, here are where things stand with the College Football Playoff.

With one week left in the regular season, as well as the conference championships, let’s take a look at who is still in the running to potentially make the College Football Playoff.

Entering Week 12, there were nine teams still alive after Alabama and Oregon bit the dust for the second time this season. While only four can make the field, it has shrunken down to about seven with North Carolina and Tennessee suffering their second losses of the regular season. UNC can still win a Power Five championship over in the ACC, but the Tar Heels are not sniffing the playoff.

Here are the magnificent seven left, as well as the overall likelihood that they make the big dance.

College Football Playoff: Who can make it in and what is their overall likelihood?

Clemson can get in as a one-loss ACC champion but will need some help as well

While Clemson can still get in as a one-loss ACC champion, the Tigers may not in fact control their own playoff destiny. This is because the Big Ten, Big 12 and SEC can all get an undefeated Power Five champion into the dance, as well as the Pac-12 having one of its better seasons in ages. Clemson needs to beat South Carolina in the Palmetto Bowl, UNC in the ACC title bout and pray.

To date, the only 12-1 Power Five champion to not get in was 2018 Ohio State, who got smoked by Purdue during the regular season. Clemson did have its issues with Norte Dame up in South Bend. For the Tigers to make it in, they will need to win out and hope one of these things happen:

  • Georgia wins the SEC
  • Notre Dame beats USC
  • The Trojans lose the Pac-12 and TCU stumbles a bit

The Tennessee loss helped Clemson tremendously, but the Tigers need to pass about three teams.
