The New York Yankees could very well sign Aaron Judge to a massive contract in a matter of days. But before then, why not anger the fanbase?

On Monday at the Winter Meetings, the New York Mets signed Justin Verlander, while the Philadelphia Phillies inked Trea Turner to an 11-year deal.

The New York Yankees, former home of Aaron Judge, made a move as well — just not the one fans were hoping for. The Yankees signed Brian Cashman to a four-year extension, ensuring he’ll be around to construct slightly-above-average rosters for close to the next half decade.

Understandably, Yankees fans did not take this news well, especially considering Judge has yet to re-sign, and New York hasn’t made many notable signings or trades since free agency opened, minus the return of Anthony Rizzo.

Yankees extend the man who should’ve extended Aaron Judge

Before the 2022 season, Brian Cashman offered Aaron Judge a seven-year, $213 million contract extension. That deal was turned down, which many supporters were surprised by. Judge, prior to this year, had always been the face of the Yankees, but struggled to stay healthy at times.

A seven-year guarantee that would’ve made Judge one of the highest-AAV position players in baseball sounded fair, at the time. Now, not so much.

Fresh off a record, AL-MVP campaign, Judge is worth well north of $300 million. One has to wonder exactly what Judge’s demands were before the season, and whether the Yankees were playing hardball with a player they, of anyone, should’ve known could put up these sorts of numbers.

Yankees fans weren’t thrilled when the news was reported about Cashman’s extension.

The mood in The Bronx could change suddenly if Cashman follows through and re-signs Judge, but until that happens, the timing of this announcement is suspect to say the least.
