Jim Schwartz joins the Cleveland Browns coaching staff, and he has lofty goals in mind.

Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns found their new defensive coordinator, hiring longtime defensive coach Jim Schwartz.

Schwartz had spent the last two years with the Tennessee Titans as a defensive assistant, but previously spent some notable time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Having been the Eagles’ defensive coordinator from 2016-2020, Schwartz knows what it’s like to sit atop the pinnacle in this sport. Schwartz was with Philadelphia when they won Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots, before he stepped away from the game temporarily.

Joining the Browns, Schwartz seemed eager to get back to the big game, telling a local Cleveland radio station there’s only one way to top that Super Bowl parade back in Philly.

After a couple of years without coordinator duties, Schwartz will take over in the role which he made his name from. But, he’ll have a tall task ahead of him in Cleveland. The Browns have continually underachieved on defense, even though they have had some strong, talented names on that unit.

Last season, the Browns were 25th against the run and finished 28th in sacks, despite boasting guys like Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney up front. Cleveland has been able to secure and draft some of the flashier names on defense over the last few years, but it hasn’t equated to on-field success.

Believe it or not, though, the Browns ended the 2022 season as the 5th-best passing defense, so they certainly have reason to be hopeful with Schwartz on board now.

During the Eagles’ Super Bowl season, Schwartz’s defense finished fourth overall, first against the run and 17th against the pass. It was in the playoffs, though, that Philadelphia’s magic truly came alive.

Now, Schwartz will attempt to recreate what he had in Philadelphia, only he’ll be starting with a much better secondary. Hopefully, he can right the ship with that front seven.
