Wisconsin vs. Northwestern prediction and odds for Monday, January 23

It’s been an interesting few days for Northwestern and a reminder of the past few seasons in college basketball and across sports. The Wildcats had to reschedule a game with Iowa and this game was postponed from Saturday.

It’s a couple days delayed, but we’ve finally got the 12-5 Wisconsin Badgers visiting 12-5 Northwestern.

The Badgers narrowly beat Penn State last Tuesday to put an end to a three-game losing streak. Northwestern is riding a two-game losing skid themselves.

Let’s check out the odds for this Big 10 matchup, the Badgers and Wildcats in Evanston.

Wisconsin vs. Northwestern prediction and pick

Wisconsin got off to a strong start this year and was derailed by an injury to its leading scorer, Tyler Wahl. More than knocking them down in the Big 10, I think that injury exposed the Badgers as early season frauds.

Their most impressive game is a one point loss to Kansas and the best win on their resume is against Marquette before the Golden Eagles really found their footing and are now No. 16. Even with Wahl back last time out, they needed a 21 to 13 foul discrepancy to beat 12-6 Penn State by three and not even cover. The Badgers are 0-7 against the spread in their last seven games and three of those were straight up losses.

Wisconsin plays with a slow pace, isn’t efficient offensively and the team’s defense has fallen off too. The Badgers are 334th in possessions per game, 175th in offensive efficiency, and 65th in defensive efficiency.

For the season their defensive efficiency is 0.942, but over their last three games, it’s ballooned up to 1.026, which would be 243rd nationally.

Northwestern isn’t a great team, it doesn’t have the high-level offense, averaging only 68.9 points per game, but Chase Audige and Boo Buie both average over 15 points a night and can carry the Wildcats on that end.

They do however, have the defense, and only allowed 60.8 points a game, and are eighth in defensive efficiency.

The worry is obviously that COVDI-19 wiped out half of their team and they’re gassed by halftime, but Wisconsin isn’t the type of team that can run them out of the gym.
