Seahawks GM reveals plan for Geno Smith and QB depth chart

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider revealed the team’s plans for the quarterback position, and if Geno Smith is involved.

The Seattle Seahawks did what no one besides their fanbase thought would happen, they made the playoffs in 2022 with Geno Smith at quarterback. After trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, the Seahawks went ahead with Smith as their starter, who went on to break the single-season passing yards record. Now, with the 2022 season at its end following their Wild Card Round elimination by the San Francisco 49ers, the Seahawks have an important decision to make regarding what to do with Smith, as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent.

When speaking with the media on Wednesday, Seahawks general manager John Schender was asked by Ian Furness of FOX 13 in Seattle if he expects to re-sign Smith. Schneider responded with “yeah, we do.”

Additionally, Furness asked if they expect to bring back Drew Lock along with Smith, to which Schneider responded with a yes and called it “an ideal situation.”

Smith is in line to receive a big payday with his contract expiring. As mentioned earlier, he broke Wilson’s single-season passing yards record set in 2016 by throwing for 4,282 yards. Additionally, Smith threw 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.8 percent of his passes. As a result of his numbers and leading Seattle to the playoffs when it was expected they would miss it, Smith was named to his first career Pro Bowl.

As for Lock, he arrived in Seattle as part of the Wilson trade. Lock competed for the starting job in training camp, but it ultimately went to Smith. Even so, the organization spoke highly of Lock when he was battling for the QB1 spot on the depth chart. Lock is an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

If the Seahawks were to, hypothetically, lose out on re-signing Smith, they are in position to take one of the top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Seahawks hold the No. 5-overall pick after receiving it from the Broncos as part of the Wilson trade. Denver finished the year 5-12. So, Seattle could get one of Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, or Will Levis with that pick.

But, based on the comments from Schneider, that is not in consideration — he expects to bring back Smith and Lock for 2023 and beyond.
