3) Why Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres is already on the trade block

It seems like the Yankees have been ready to trade Gleyber Torres for years. Ever since he convinced them he’s not a starting shortstop, Torres has been a trade candidate. He’s not someone the Yankees should force out of town. In the right deal, however, Torres is the kind of player the team could swap for a valuable piece or two.

Torres may never get back to where he was in 2019, but which hitters will? Those juiced baseballs have been buried under where Giants Stadium used to stand alongside copies of the infamous E.T. game for Atari. Major League Baseball wants us all to forget about the ridiculous offensive output that year which featured 38 home runs from Torres.

Fans received a lot of insight into how unsustainable those numbers were for Torres when he hit only 9 home runs in 516 chances back in 2021. He did turn back into a slugger last season, popping 24 in 572 trips to the plate. Compared to other second basemen across the league, he remains one of the better hitters from a power standpoint.

It will have to take a sweet deal for the Yankees to pull the trigger on a Torres trade. Immediately replaceable by simply putting DJ LeMahieu at the position, the only thing that may make sense for the Yankees is if Torres is traded for a power-hitting left fielder. Hopefully the team takes Hicks in the deal, too.
