Former Raiders tight end Foster Moreau was a coveted free agent but he’s stepping away from the NFL after a physical revealed he has cancer.

Foster Moreau, who spent his career in the NFL to this point with the Las Vegas Raiders, was one of the best free agents remaining on the open market. It was expected that he’d get a nice contract to play in an elevated role from the one he had serving as the No. 2 behind Darren Waller in Vegas.

That has been put on hold.

On Wednesday, Moreau revealed that, during his free agency visit with the Saints and his subsequent physical, it was revealed that the tight end has Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer, and that he will be stepping away from the NFL and football for now.

Raiders news: Former TE Foster Moreau diagnosed with cancer, stepping away from NFL

Moreau revealed the diagnosis on Twitter in a thread with the following message:

"“Through somewhat of a miraculous process, this Free Agency period has been life changing for me. During a routine physical conducted by the Saint’s medical team down in New Orleans, I’ve come to learn that I have Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and will be stepping away from football at this time to fight a new opponent: Cancer. I’m grateful for the support and thankful for people who have stood firm with me. There hasn’t been a single step I’ve taken without hundreds of people lighting the path before me, and I will continue to seek their guidance. That being said, I’ll go kick this thing’s ass and get back to doing what I love! AMDG!”"

Free agency truly may have saved Moreau’s life in this instance. Perhaps team doctors would’ve caught the cancer if his contract weren’t up, but it’s impossible to say.

Raider Nation and the entire NFL world will be in Moreau’s corner as he enters his fight with cancer and hoping that he not only beats the disease but also returns to the field once again as well.
