Ezekiel Elliott makes a bizarre free-agency request with very little leverage

Dallas Cowboys free agent Ezekiel Elliott is already thinking about his next destination — and a potential number change.

Given Ezekiel Elliott is one of the richest running backs in NFL history and averaged under four yards per carry last season, perhaps he should take what he can get, rather than making demands.

There’s no real clue as to Elliott’s next destination. The Bills and Chargers emerged as betting favorites, but few reporters have linked Zeke anywhere but Dallas.

The Cowboys could theoretically bring Elliott back on a cheaper deal. They signed Ronald Jones this week, but it’s tough to view him as a real ‘replacement’ for the Ohio State product, as Jones played just six games last year for the Super Bowl champion Chiefs.

None of that has stopped Elliott from demanding a number change.

Elliott wore No. 15 at Ohio State, which is what he’s referring to in his tweet. Wherever he ends up next season, that could be an option should another player be willing to give it up.

NFL rumors: Where will former Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott play next season?

Buffalo signed former Patriots running back Damien Harris in free agency, thus closing the loop on their needs at the position.

Kellen Moore and the Los Angeles Chargers offer an intriguing fit. Austin Ekeler asked for a trade a few weeks back, as he’s not happy with his contract given his increased workload the last few years. If Ekeler leaves — or even should he close and the Chargers want another veteran back around — Elliott makes a lot of sense in a system he’s familiar with.

The Chargers are the betting favorite to land Zeke at the moment, though there hasn’t been any confirmed reporting linking him to LA.

No. 15 belongs to Cameron Dicker, the Chargers kicker, so safe to say it’s available in powder blue if Elliott throws some money his way.
